HEY! Have you ever heard of a myth about eyes twitching? If your
left eyelid twitchs, it means you are going to have a good luck soon and that
applies oppositely to the right eyelid! But then let’s talk more to the science
opinions.
Eye twitching is
one of the commonly encounter
conditions by many. It is also called Myokymia
or Blepherospasm. It results from
fascicular contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscle.
Eyelid myokymia is typically unilateral and most commonly
involves one of the lower
eyelids. Though it is transient and recurrent it is annoying.
Before you can find a solution
to your twitching eyes, you need to determine the cause.
Unfortunately the exact cause
of the condition is very difficult to pin point. These contractions are
nonsynchronous, semirhythmic discharges of motor units, discharging at a rate
of 3-8 Hz. The discharges have intervals of 100-200m/s between individual motor
bursts. The focus of irritation is most likely the nerve fibers within the
muscle. Pontine dysfunction in the region of the facial nerve nucleus has also
been suggested.
Most common causes include:
1.
Tiredness: Sleep
deprivation is a leading cause of eye twitching.
2.
Stress:
Both Physical and mental stress is said to have some role. Sometimes it can
also be related to problems with vision.
3.
Caffeine and alcohol: There are some studies showing the role of these
substances in eye twitching.
Dry eyes, Allergies and some
forms of nutrition imbalance can also cause eye twitching. Demyelination and
brainstem lesions are rarely found in patients with myokymia. Some
medical conditions to be differentiated are Hemifacial
spasms, Essential blepharospasm, Meige syndrome and Spastic-paretic
facial contracture. Diagnosis needs a
complete Neurologic examination and video documenting the event. MRI is rarely
required. Treatment is
reassurance. If any precipitating factors are identified reduction of these
precipitating factors help a lot.
If the symptom is
dialing then local subcutaneous botulinum
toxin A (BOTOX®) can alleviate the symptom for 3 to 6 months after which
recurrence is possible. There
is some role of anxiolytic medication in those with evident anxiousness.
Here are also some advices what to do if you have a eyes
twitching moment!
· Drink less caffeine
· Get Adequate Sleep
· Keep the eye surface and membranes lubricated with eye drops/ artificial
tears.
· Apply a warm compress to eyes when spasms occur.
